In the midst of the tumultuous First World War, the German army launched a surprise attack on British towns along the North East Coast, including Hartlepool, on December 16th, 1914. The Durham Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA) was promptly mobilized to defend the Tees and man the guns that would protect its shores. The battery had a rich history dating back to 1859, when it was initially built to counter the perceived threat of French invasion in the 1850s.

The Battery's early years were marked by rapid construction, with work beginning in 1859 and completion just a year later. It consisted of four large smooth-bore guns, with a smaller battery located next door, housing another pair of cannons. The guns themselves were 68pr, boasting an effective range of up to a mile and a half.
